What you’ll be doing 

 
As Principal Engineer you will be joining an exciting team with the opportunity to heavily influence the engineering culture and direction. This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll combine your technical expertise with your architectural judgement. 

You’ll be coaching and mentoring our engineering teams to a high level of technical and operational excellence. This could involve conducting a technical solution review, leading workshops, or simply pairing with engineers to deliver working software. 

This is a hybrid role where ideally, you’d spend a minimum of 2 days in the office each month, but, if possible, at least once a week. 

 
What will you be responsible for? 

  • Working with our Head of Architecture to lead engineering in a technical and architectural capacity for our core platform. Setting and delivering the next stage in platform evolution.  
  • Lead hands on implementation of solutions by partnering with our engineers across all levels.  
  • Coach and mentor engineers, recognizing when team members require support and help with their professional development.
  • Be a trusted authority that our team members and managers look to for advice and guidance that ranges from best practices to providing the best solutions to our technical challenges.
  • Promote modern architectural and technical practices leading our developer experience assisting with writing and maintaining guidelines, resolving design issues, and collaborating with teams to give clear, pragmatic forward thinking advice.

What skills, experience and qualification do you need to succeed in this role? 

Strong experience in:  

  • Promoting modern engineering practices – CI/CD, TDD, Clean Code, pair programming, DevSecOps.  
  • Modern distributed architecture patterns and cloud technologies. 
  • Modern Python.
  • Testing automation and embedding a test automation first mindset. 
  • Designing and developing systems for high availability and scalability. 
  • Proven track record of mentoring / coaching other developers. 
  • Understand how to balance speed, quality and functionality and communicate where the trade-offs are being made.
