Our food chain is broken - the system that can barely feed 7 billion people will not feed 10 billion we’re expected to reach by 2050. And while it's hard to imagine that things could be different, they have to be.

At Better Origin, our mission is to fix the broken food chain. We are inspired by nature and how it deals with waste, with nutrients always flowing in a circular system.

That is exactly what happens inside the  Better Origin X1 container , where food waste is fed to insects, which then become a carbon negative source of protein for animal feed. This enables us to not only reduce food waste and emissions, but also support a local-first supply chain.

Requirements

The X1 insect mini farm is a product at the start of a journey that will span continents and help revolutionise they way we eat. As the backend biased software engineer you will be responsible for:

• Build a platform to orchestrate communication between our PLC, AI engine (OverMind) and cloud databases
• Building tools and features to control the mini farm
• Facilitate the move from PLC/HMI user interface to a PC/Web one

You will spend your first years working as part of a product team aimed at developing a robust and scalable solution to take us from 20 to 200 deployed systems. The solutions must be scalable, supportable, and repeatable. There will be a balance of iterative development of the current system and development projects to trial and release new features. This role offers great freedom in choosing the best technology and architecture to deliver optimal product.

• You are a product person. You have a proven record in delivering software to products (machines or repeated identical systems). You understand the difference between a product and a project.
• You are a team member. You prefer to develop as a collaboration.
• You are current. You know and understand the latest advances ininfrastructure and technology and how they could be adopted into your field.

The ideal candidate is a Software developer / full stack developer with (Back-end bias). They have experience developing Python/ javascript / typescript applications whilst implementing industrial communication interfaces such as OPC UA, ProfiNet. They embrace unit testing and TDD and strive to deploy only when confident of success. They have experience of deploying code in containerised/virtualized formats such as Docker.
